DEPUTY INSPECTION OF EPOXY BOLTS & REBAR
A Special Inspection by a Deputy Inspector for Epoxy will include the following items to be noted on the Deputy Inspector's Report:
- Verification of the hole diameter - Most epoxy requires the hole to be at least 1/8" larger in diameter than the size of the rebar dowel or bolt being inserted in the hole (although some epoxy manufacturers require the hole to be 1/16th larger in diameter then the bolt being epoxy installed).
- Check the requirements for your particular epoxy, but if you are still unsure, give us a call and we will be happy to look up the requirements for your brand & type of epoxy that you are using!
- Verification that the hole depths match with what is required on the approved plans. The required embedment depth means embedment depth into actual concrete, and does not include the wood, such as a bottom sill plate when epoxying anchor bolts.
- Verification that the hole has been cleaned properly. Concrete dust that is made during the hole drilling processes will keep the epoxy from bonding with the concrete if it is not cleaned out. Using a bottle brush, and also blowing out the hole with compressed air are steps that are required by epoxy manufacturers.
- JLI Deputy Inspections carries the bottle brushes required to clean out the hole before inserting the epoxy and we will be happy to let you use them to make sure your epoxy installed rebar inspection and epoxy installed bolt inspection goes ok!
- Epoxy type and expiration date will be verified. Somewhere on the tube of epoxy (rear lower section in typed numbers of Simpson epoxy shown in photo below) there will be an expiration date that must be checked. Occasionally we will see epoxy that has been recently purchased that will be expired, so always check it out at the store before buying it!
A few Last things to keep in mind.....
A Deputy Inspector does not need to be on-site while the holes are being drilled (except in a few circumstances).
Drill the holes prior to the Deputy Inspection, follow the above steps and the Special Inspection should be no problem so that you can move on to the next steps of your project!
